Ireland Into the Mystic: The Poetic Spirit and Cultural Content of Irish Rock Music, 1970-2020

Programa Oficial de Doutoramento en Estudos Ingleses Avanzados: Lingüística, Literatura e Cultura. 5018V01[Abstract] Music and literature have always played a central role in the social and cultural life of Ireland, not only as a source of entertainment, but also as an effective way of recording Ireland's own history and culture and communicating these widely throughout the world, defining the identity of a nation and its people in a unique way. The main aim of this doctoral thesis, then, will be to extend the concerns of Irish Studies by bringing to light the intellectual and cultural profundity of Irish rock music from an interdisciplinary perspective, which might also represent an innovative approach to the analysis of songs as a literary phenomenon. Thus, analytical investigation of the formative links among music, literature and culture in Ireland will be based on a detailed examination of songs and representative material by a range of Irish rock artists in their cultural and historical contexts, in an attempt to convey the ways in which Irish culture and identity have become embedded within rock music through the power of narratives. By assessing the developments undergone in Irish rock music over five decades, this thesis will also explore the story of Ireland from the perspective of the rock music produced throughout the island during a period of rapid, decisive change at many levels.[Resumen] La música y la literatura han desempeñado siempre un papel central en la sociedad y la vida cultural de Irlanda, no sólo como fuentes de entretenimiento, sino también como medios para dejar constancia de la historia e identidad propias del país y transmitir tales características por el mundo de una forma ciertamente única. El objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral será por tanto desarrollar un tema de estudio de interés y relevancia para los Estudios Irlandeses al tratar la profundidad cultural e intelectual de la música rock irlandesa desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar, lo que también supondrá un enfoque innovador del análisis de canciones como fenómeno literario. Así, se investigarán las relaciones entre la música, la literatura y la cultura en Irlanda a partir de la presentación, análisis, comparación y estudio de canciones y material artístico representativo de artistas rock irlandeses en su contexto musical, cultural e histórico, para exponer las formas en las que la se han interrelacionado diferentes ideas literarias, musicales y culturales en el rock irlandés. Finalmente, al estudiar el desarrollo de la música rock en Irlanda a lo largo de cinco décadas, también se indagará en la historia de la isla desde el punto de vista de la música rock producida durante una etapa de cambios decisiva a varios niveles.[Resumo] A música e a literatura tiveron sempre un papel central na vida cultural e mais na sociedade de Irlanda, non só como fontes de entretemento senón tamén como unha maneira efectiva de deixar constancia da historia e identidade propias do país e transmitir esas características polo mundo dunha maneira única. O obxectivo principal desta tese doutoral será polo tanto desenvolver un tema de estudio de interese e relevancia para os Estudios Irlandeses ao tratar a profundidade cultural e intelectual da música rock irlandesa dende unha perspectiva interdisciplinaria, o que tamén supoñerá un enfoque innovador da análise de cancións como fenómeno literario. Así pois, investigaranse as relacións entre a música, a literatura e a cultura en Irlanda a partires da presentación, análise, comparación e estudo de cancións e de material artístico representativo de artistas rock irlandeses no seu contexto cultural e histórico para mostrar as formas nas que se relacionan diferentes ideas literarias, musicais e culturais no rock irlandés. Finalmente, ao investigar o desenvolvemento da música rock en Irlanda ao longo de cinco décadas, esta tese tamén indagará na historia da illa dende o punto de vista da música rock producida na illa nunha etapa de cambios decisiva en varios niveis

Musa creadora: a xoven muller artista e a función das artes nas Künstlerromans de mulleres

[Abstract] This Master's thesis provides a comparative analysis of the portrayal of the woman artist in Willa Cather's The Song of The Lark, Cristina García's Dreaming in Cuban and Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street to examine the importance of creativity and art-making processes in the development of a woman's positive self-identity —whether they are singers, painters or writers, as it is the case with the respective female protagonists. Inspired by the authors' own journeys as novelists, the young protagonists of these künstlerromans explore their relationship with family and society and ask fundamental questions about gender and creativity, weaving the arts into everything they do. Thus, this thesis also interprets the implied dialogue of the authors with the young artist depicted in each novel in order to discover their views on creativity in both its aesthetic and feminist dimensions. As I try to show, it becomes clear that Cather, García and Cisneros discuss in their works the crisis between what is expected from women in light of factors such as gender and culture in opposition to how these artist-heroines choose to see themselves by putting forth an identity that is characterized by independence, autonomy, rebellion and determination —positive terms that describe certain remarkable continuities in the ways in which women writers present the female characters they relate to. By thoroughly examining the above-mentioned issues through the lenses of cultural and literary theories, as well as through art and music psychology studies, this thesis also highlights the fact that the role of creativity and arts integration whether in the music, painting and/or literature fields have always been a powerful interdisciplinary tool for women from various distinct social and cultural contexts to bridge reality with desired places, desired states of mind and accomplishments.[Resumen] Este trabajo de fin de Máster presenta un análisis comparativo sobre la representación de la mujer artista en las novelas The Song of The Lark de Willa Cather, Dreaming in Cuban de Cristina García y The House on Mango Street de Sandra Cisneros, respectivamente, con el objetivo de evaluar la importancia que tienen la creatividad y los procesos artísticos—ya sean en literatura, pintura y/o música—en el desarrollo de la identidad propia de una mujer. Basándose en la evolución de las propias autoras como novelistas, las protagonistas de estas künstlerromans exploran sus relaciones familiares y sociales y se plantean cuestiones esenciales sobre el género y la creatividad, entrelazando las artes en todo aquello que hacen. Por tanto, este trabajo también interpreta los diálogos implícitos entre las autoras y las jóvenes artistas de cada novela para descubrir su visión sobre la creatividad tanto en sus dimensiones estéticas como feministas. Se trata de demostrar así que Cather, García y Cisneros tratan en estas obras el conflicto entre lo que se espera de una mujer según factores culturales y de género en oposición a cómo éstas deciden comportarse, defendiendo así una personalidad independiente, autónoma, rebelde y con determinación —términos que describen notables características en común entre las autoras y los personajes femeninos con los que se identifican. Analizando en profundidad las cuestiones mencionadas a través de teorías culturales y literarias, así como de estudios de psicología musical y del arte, este trabajo destaca el hecho de que la creatividad y la integración de las diferentes artes en la música, la pintura y/o la literatura ha sido siempre una poderosa herramienta con la que mujeres de distintos contextos sociales y culturales han conectado la realidad con sus deseos, aspiraciones y logros.Traballo fin de mestrado (UDC.FIL).
